1961 AIAA College Football Season Recap: "Maryland State Reigns Supreme"

Maryland State Claims First National Title

The Maryland State Bengals capped a banner year by claiming their first AIAA National Title in football, adding to their 1960 basketball crown and past baseball championships. The Bengals, led by a powerful rushing attack featuring halfback Mike Moran (1,174 yards) and fullback Bob Butters, dominated opponents, scoring nearly 34 points per game. Their 10-1 season was punctuated by a 48-6 rout of Oklahoma City State in the Sunshine Classic, convincing pollsters to crown them champions despite a late-season stumble against Coastal State.

Key wins for Maryland State included a 26-14 triumph over Great Lakes Alliance champion Detroit City College, and their Sunshine Classic victory solidified their top ranking. The Bengals became one of a select few schools to win AIAA titles in football, basketball, and baseball, cementing their place in collegiate sports history.

Contenders Left Behind

Several programs felt slighted by the final polls. Annapolis Maritime, which went 10-0, finished second after a narrow 25-20 Desert Classic win over Canyon A&M. The Navigators faced criticism for a soft schedule, but their perfect season and thrilling 44-41 win over rival Rome State marked a stunning turnaround from their winless campaign just three years earlier.

Spokane State (10-1) claimed third after a dramatic 27-24 victory over Detroit City College in the East-West Classic. The Indians overcame a seven-point deficit with a late-game drive and a clutch 40-yard field goal by John Vaughn. Penn Catholic (9-1) rounded out the top four after a convincing 30-10 win over Central Ohio in the Bayside Classic, powered by a dominant ground game.

Defending champion Georgia Baptist dropped to fifth after a 9-2 season. Despite missing out on the national title race, the Gators secured a gritty 23-21 Lone Star Classic win over Lubbock State, their third consecutive victory over the Cowboys in a bowl game.

Deep South Dominance

For the first time since 1949, the Deep South Conference failed to place a team in the top four, but its representatives went undefeated on New Year’s Day. Cumberland defeated Arkansas A&T 31-21 in the Oilman Classic behind Ron Filas’ 148 rushing yards. Bluegrass State, the surprise conference champion, bested Coastal State 24-10 in the Cajun Classic, with quarterback Bruce Fitzgerald showcasing his dual-threat ability.

Jack Dobbins: A Legend Cemented

American Atlantic’s Jack Dobbins became the first two-time Christian Trophy winner, leading the nation with 1,672 rushing yards and finishing his career as the AIAA’s all-time rushing leader with 6,763 yards. Dobbins' record-breaking freshman season in 1958 included a single-season mark of 2,300 rushing yards, a feat that still stands.
