 | Sakai Pitches Gem as Kingfishers Beat Kyoto, 1-0 Saturday, September 8th , 1962 The Yokohama Kingfishers did little to support starter Masatoshi Sakai against the Kyoto Owls, but it turned out he didn't need the help. The right-hander spun a complete game shutout against the Owls, striking out 9 and surrendering 4 hits. The performance from Sakai allowed Yokohama to escape with the 1-0 win, despite an anemic offense. "Nobody came to me and said, 'Masatoshi, we're gonna need you to win this one for us today,' but I could feel it," Sakai told BNN reporters following the win. "I'm the guy that will step up for you when you need it." Sakai has a 12-8 season record so far. In 25 starts, he has fanned 116 batters in 169.1 innings with a 2.87 ERA.
