Game of the Week: Pittsburgh Paladins at Boston Americans

Our Expert Predictions:

Jeremy Piper : Pittsburgh Paladins
I love what they are doing in Pittsburgh coaching-wise. Head coach Frank Atkins is a major reason they will win this game. He is running a great offense. The way they win this game will tell a lot about what they are as a team.

Mary Moore : Boston Americans
The difference in this game will be their defense. They are 5th in points allowed, averaging only 16.2. They are 4th in the league pass average yards per rush. The referees will have their work cut out for them. This will be very competitive and intense.

Jim Nox : Boston Americans
When you consider the two rosters, you would be a fool not to think that Tommy Waldron - DT is a key cog in the defensive machinery of the Americans. Should be interesting to see him going against a quality opponent.

Darren Francis : Pittsburgh Paladins
I think their offense will carry them. They are maulers, 2nd in the league in pancakes. They are 3rd in the league in passes of more than 20 yards. They are 1st in the league average yards per rush. If they do not win, I have to buy cake for the entire office. That is how sure I am.

SS James Lorenz (ATL) goes #1 overall!

NEW YORK -- The Atlanta Firebirds drafted James Lorenz #1 overall in the 1974 draft. The 6' 1" SS fits the team's needs perfectly. Said Firebirds general manager: "It's up to us to develop him and get good players around him."

"The great thing about the game of football is, it's a team game," Lorenz said on a conference call. "I'm just going to be one piece of the puzzle."

Moore and Nox Mock Draft

Pick 1: Atlanta Firebirds
Larry Moore: Mike Lindberg - QB
Is accurate enough to make most throws. Rock solid player is just what they need. A great fit here, both in terms of need and quality.

Jim Nox: Wilfredo Blackwell - SS
Intangibles, leadership, what's not to love? Respected for his good behavior on the field. Fast. Fast enough to cover. Fast enough to Blitz. Fast enough to get picked this early. Tackles with nice fundamentals. People usually go down. Fits nicely with their needs. Fits nicely with the draft spot. Getting it right is important with these early picks. This guy is right.

Pick 2: Cincinnati Rivermen
Larry Moore: John Murphy - LB
Football is a team sport, and he knows it. Really strong. Will push through blocks. Offenses will need to keep tabs on him. He will close down fairly quickly if left unblocked. Coaches like his instincts. When the available talent fits what you need, there is reason to celebrate. They are getting a great talent who will serve them for many years.

Jim Nox: John Murphy - LB
The ultimate team player. Amazing strength for the position. Makes him versatile, and tells of his high ceiling. Is fast enough to get sacks. Is fast enough to contain outside runs. Those are the players you look for at Defensive End. Bright kid, reacts well on the field. Might not be what fans want, but there is a reason people are getting paid to make these decisions. This is a rock solid pick, and he fits what they are looking for. Fans will come around quickly once they see him play.

Pick 3: Chicago Wildcats
Larry Moore: Orville Applegate - T
He has sufficient strength to have a chance against grown men on the defensive line. This kid is already a pretty good blocker in the running game. He will only get better as he refines his technique. Displays nice technique when blocking on pass plays. Keeps his balance and buys time for the quarterback. Fill the need with a quality player. Best case scenario here.

Jim Nox: Orville Applegate - T
Was among the stronger offensive linemen in college. Nice blocking skills on run plays. He will contribute to the running game. Pass blocking against professional players makes for a difficult transition from college. But the tape indicates he will do well in that regard. They almost have to make this pick. You do not want to look back in five years and see this kid on another team knowing he could have been yours.

Pick 4: Dallas Stallions
Larry Moore: Jeff Middleton - LB
The muscles on this kid allows him to shed blocks and keep contain. He is going to get so many sacks, just from his speed alone. Elite speed coming of the edge is what you are paying for with this young man. They need him now. Well yesterday actually. They will love him tomorrow. They will revere him by the end of his career.

Jim Nox: Jeff Middleton - LB
Sufficiently strong that bull rushing opponents is not off the table. Gives him more options on the field. Rarely do we call defensive linemen sideline to sideline defenders, but this kid is so fast the term almost applies. Do not fret. You need him, fans love him. Surefire pick.

Pick 5: Philadelphia Frigates
Larry Moore: Fred Ferrell - DT
A leader on the field and in the locker room. Will flatten smaller offensive linemen and go toe to toe with bigger ones. Explosive first step. Has the speed to become a true sack machine. Consistently takes down ball carrier when he gets to him. With this kid, this is a need pick they will not regret.

Jim Nox: Fred Ferrell - DT
Teammates gravitate toward him, they follow his lead. Coaches love that about him. Sufficiently strong to bull rush. Not the strongest, but strong enough to stay on his feet against inside runs. He is going to get sacks, no two ways about it. Just his speed alone almost guarantees that. Tackles with good leverage. Rarely lets people go. A player that fits their needs. The promise of a future star. This will be great for the franchise.

Pick 6: New York Stars
Larry Moore: Robert Dawson - DT
'Team player', this is the correct term for him. He makes everyone around him better. Known for being a bit of a joker in the locker room. but in the good way, everyone smiles when asked about him. Powerful enough to shed blocks and free himself up to make plays in the running game. Do not fret. You need him, fans love him. Surefire pick.

Jim Nox: Andrew Maggard - CB
I mean come on! Did you see how fast he is? He is alert and reacts well on the field. Fans might not be on board with what can be framed as a need pick. But trust me once they see this kid play, they will be more than happy.

Pick 7: Milwaukee Stags
Larry Moore: Arthur Mclaughlin - T
He will occasionally throw of defenders to the ground when blocking them. Plays with intelligence. They need players at the position, and good ones at that. He fits the bill, he is worth the pick. End of story.

Jim Nox: Robert Dawson - DT
This kid breeds synergy, teams play better when he is on the field. Liked by coaches and teammates. While not the strongest kid we have seen, his strength is an asset. It gives him the platform to be a great player. Do not be afraid to draft a position of need here. This kid is well worthy of a pick this early. Perfect situation for him, and great fit for the team.

Pick 8: Seattle Roughnecks
Larry Moore: Andrew Maggard - CB
Let me reiterate: You cannot coach speed! He is going to make a lot of money over the years with that forty time. You do not need to tell him things twice. Very quick learner. Fits the bill, great quality pick, and fills a soft spot on the roster. They should have no qualms here, run to the podium and get your man.

Jim Nox: Martin Harp - CB
Let me reiterate: You cannot coach speed! He is going to make a lot of money over the years with that forty time. He is alert and makes smart decisions to developments in the play. A player that fits their needs. The promise of a future star. This will be great for the franchise.

Pick 9: Los Angeles Tigers
Larry Moore: Porter Quillen - LB
Great strength and physique. He is alert and reacts well on the field. The stars align for them to get him here. Just what they need. Blue-chip player with great upside. Hard to botch this pick.

Jim Nox: Porter Quillen - LB
This young man can hold his own in the weight room. And he is strong enough to hold his own on the field as well. Shows good understanding of his assignments on the field. Blue-chip player. Exactly what they look for. Add a young talent to a roster thin at the position, a great fit.

Pick 10: San Francisco Wings
Larry Moore: Pat Wall - G
Even if he is not the strongest, coaches like his strength. And he has enough of it. This is a guy who is already a pretty good blocker in the run game. Well schooled in the game, and it shows on the field. They need him now. Well yesterday actually. They will love him tomorrow. They will revere him by the end of his career.

Jim Nox: Donald Acuna - CB
The guy has gets along with everyone. Nice speed. Will allow him to do a lot of things. Works well in the classroom. Fill the need with a quality player. Best case scenario here.

Coaching Carousel Predictions.

The offseason is upon us and that means teams are shaking up their coaching staffs. This means that we get to take our annual look at coordinators who could make the leap to become head coaches, and the teams who are likely to poach them.

The prime candidates identified by our experts are:
Red Denton - Defensive Coordinator - St. Louis Ramblers
Michael Garcia - Offensive Coordinator - Washington Wasps
Eric Davis - Offensive Coordinator - St. Louis Ramblers
Corey Brownell - Defensive Coordinator - Philadelphia Frigates
Rafael Wilson - Defensive Coordinator - Cincinnati Rivermen
Richard Hillman - Offensive Coordinator - Dallas Stallions
Eric Vaughan - Defensive Coordinator - Washington Wasps
Kareem Castellano - Offensive Coordinator - Pittsburgh Paladins
Laverne Plummer - Defensive Coordinator - Dallas Stallions
Kenneth Chapman - Defensive Coordinator - Denver Mountaineers

As always, we are prone to wild speculations, so we asked our in-house experts to do a little matchmaking between candidates and teams. Here is what they came up with:

Mary Moore:
Eric Davis leaves the Ramblers to become the head coach for the San Francisco Wings.

Darren Francis:
I think the Wasps lose Michael Garcia and I see him heading to San Francisco Wings.

Jim Nox:
The Wasps cannot hold on to Michael Garcia. I would like to see him coach the San Francisco Wings.

Jeremy Piper:
Michael Garcia is certainly on the move. That means Wasps will need a new coordinator. As for where Garcia ends up? Well, I think Milwaukee Stags is a good bet.
