His teammates and manager said he had a poised demeanor about him that was typical of someone much older and more experienced. His poise has paid off, as the 24-year-old turned in a sparkling season and has been named the winner of the Heartland League Reliever of the Year Award for 1916.
The Mobile, Alabama native won the award with 5 saves in 40 relief appearances, 18 strikeouts in 70.1 innings and a record of 2-3 to go with his 3.33 ERA.
