| Osaka Blanks Falcons, Smith at His Best Wednesday, July 3rd , 1963 It wasn't easy but the Osaka Sailors made it look that way.
Starter Atsuhiro Smith shut out the Fukuoka Falcons despite having what he later called "sub-par" stuff, and the Osaka Sailors cruised to victory, 7-0. Smith allowed only 1 hit and rang up 2 strikeouts but insisted later that he did not deserve primary credit for the win.
"It didn't feel quite right today, but I got a lot of help to get through," he said. "I trusted my catcher and the guys behind me bailed me out more than once when I screwed up."
This year, Smith has fashioned a 6-3 mark, 3.56 ERA and pitched 60.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .242 against him and he has logged 25 strikeouts.
