| Sakai Baffles Kinboshi Batters Thursday, August 28th , 1975 Masatoshi Sakai of the Vesutan Bees was on top of his game.
The 40-year-old tantalized the Kinboshi Kites with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.
"He had the changeup working," Kinboshi manager Frank Moore said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Vesutan hurler had 3 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 7 hits in his complete-game effort.
Sakai told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
This season, Sakai has 10 wins and 9 losses and a 2.95 ERA.
