Cunningham, 23, realizes that pitching isn't all about how hard you can throw, it's about accuracy and about picking yourself up even when you've had a run of bad luck.
"I'd like to say I don't give them anything to hit," said the Sacramento starter, "but that's not true. Every pitcher gives up a long ball now and then. Usually there's at least one mistake in each at-bat, but you've got to battle through your mistakes and build some positive momentum. The rest will fall into place."
Things did fall into place for Cunningham. In August he took the ball for 48 innings while notching 19 strikeouts, a 1.88 ERA and a 4-1 record.
This season, Cunningham has compiled a 11-9 mark with a 3.76 ERA in 26 starts. | | Phoenix's Baker Collects August Batting Honor Monday, September 1st , 1975 Dick Baker said it was "focus and determination" that led him to winning the August Batter of the Month award for the Great Western League.
Whatever it was, the Phoenix right fielder could not be denied, hitting .356 with 5 home runs, 22 RBIs and 19 runs scored to round out his great month.
For the season, Baker has hit .344 with 9 home runs and 72 RBIs. He has played in 85 games and scored 60 times. | | | GREAT WESTERN LEAGUE STANDINGS | |
