| Aces Blank Louisville, Sykes Winner Thursday, September 14th , 1916 There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.
Gene Sykes of the Knoxville Aces blanked the Louisville Stallions, 4-0, at Louisville Base Ball Grounds, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 4-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.
"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Sykes said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."
Sykes walked 4 and struck out 2 in the victory.
"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Stallions manager Al Sanderson said later.
This season, Sykes has crafted a 14-14 mark with a 2.95 ERA in 253.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .255 against him and he has 87 strikeouts. | | |
