| Chieftains Suffer 9-0 Drubbing from Crescents Monday, August 7th , 1916 The New Orleans Crescents shut out the Nashville Chieftains, 9-0, behind the strong pitching of Wilbur Kelly. Kelly surrendered only 1 hit in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 3.
Following the last out, Kelly appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Nashville manager Ed Harriman, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Kelly's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The Chieftains skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Crescents press conference, Kelly confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Kelly said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," New Orleans manager Dave Shepard added.
This year, Kelly has worked 174.2 innings with 69 strikeouts en route to a 7-8 record and 3.56 ERA. | | |
