 | Messer Hammers 4 Homers Thursday, September 21st , 1950 Hitting a single home run is a tough task. Hitting two in a game is impressive. Hitting three is remarkable. Anything beyond that is borderline unbelievable -- yet that's what Walt Messer did today in the 9-3 New York Gothams victory over the Pittsburgh Miners. Messer went 4-for-5 with 4 home runs and drove in 6 runs in a once-in-a-lifetime feat that the opposing manager later labeled "impossible." "I don't believe it really happened," Miners manager Jim Williams joked to BNN reporters afterward. "I don't ever enjoy losing a game, but this kid was special today. I have never seen a guy hit 4 in a game before. I didn't enjoy it, but it was special." Walt Messer hit a two-run home run off Adam Grayson in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Adam Grayson in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Adam Grayson in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Billy Ligons in the 6th and flied out in the 8th.
