Lew Mercer went 1 for 3 with a double for Detroit. The three-time All-Star had a key at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 6-6 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Otey Stevens. It was his 42nd RBI of the season.
