| Win Makes Comets 78-63 | The Houston Comets got a good effort from starter Johnny Blackburn in defeating the Chicago Chiefs at Whitney Park. The final score was 4-2. The winner was Blackburn. He threw 7.0 innings of 6-hit ball. The loser was Johnny Maples. Bob Young was called on to finish, recording his 26th save.
Houston used a clutch at-bat from Don Jones to capture the win. The third baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Comets ahead, 4-1. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"Johnny knows how to get ahead of hitters, stay ahead of hitters, and put people out," said Houston manager Glenn Carney.
Houston, now 78-63, holds down second place in the Federal Association West. | |
