The inspired effort of Fukuoka third baseman Toshifumi Shibuya was not enough to prevent a loss, 6-5, to the Nagasaki Stars. Shibuya went 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The winning pitcher was Koson Mitsunaga. His record now stands at 6-7. The right-hander went 8 innings, allowing 5 runs on 13 hits for the Stars. Nagasaki, now 38-43, holds down 4th place in the Western League.

In the top of the seventh, Isao Matsuda, the 3rd overall pick in the 1972 draft, delivered for Nagasaki. That's when he belted a 2-run home run, putting the Stars up, 5-4. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a climactic one.

"We put it together and came out with the win," Matsuda said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
