| Sailors Earn Clutch Win, 2-1 | Kobe got a terrific performance from pitcher Gunji Matsuda, but it wasn't enough to beat the Osaka Sailors. Osaka won the Matsunoki Stadium contest, 2-1. Matsuda threw 7.0 innings of 2-hit ball for the losing team. Tom Drill, credited with the win in relief, is now 1-0. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 1.2 innings. The Sailors, now 1-0, have stormed out of the gates.
The result might have been different, had it not been for 22-year old right fielder Kesanori Kikuchi. Kikuchi had a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Sailors ahead, 2-1. For the game, Kikuchi had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Sailors manager Heikichi Kawasaki, "I like our chances."
