| Bears Fall Short, 2-1, at Yokohama | Fans watched the Yokohama Kingfishers and the Sapporo Bears fight to the finish.
Pitching was the name of the game in a tight contest between the Yokohama Kingfishers and the Sapporo Bears. Yokohama won it, 2-1. Yokohama starter Shigeyasu Hirayama was in command. Hirotsugu Sasaki, now 12-5, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 3 innings.
Shinji Fukuda, who finished 5th in the EL in extra base hits with 42 in 1952, aided the Yokohama cause with a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the first. For the game, the right fielder drove in one run.
"Really good pitchers have that ability to raise their game when they need to," said Yokohama manager Tommy McDonell.
The first-place Kingfishers, at 75-48, lead the Eastern League by 9½ games.
