| Bears Upend Reliables, 2-1 | The Sapporo Bears, behind a great outing from Naruki Shimada, who finished 3rd in the WL in wins with 15 in 1971, defeated the Hosho Reliables, 2-1, at Nagoya Minami Stadium. Shimada picked up the win for Sapporo, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 7-10. Eisaku Yamaoka earned the save, his 16th, for the Bears.
There was more than one reason the Bears beat the Reliables, but Shimada's big at-bat in the top of the fourth was an important factor. He staked his team to a 2-0 lead when he hit a 2-run double.
Shimada called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
The Bears raised their record to 45-69.
