The Bears grabbed a win, 8-7, at Owls Park, overcoming a fine effort from Kyoto pitcher Takayuki Kumasaka. Kumasaka went 8 innings and allowed no runs. Katsumi Sato earned his 13th save in 19 chances. The Bears improve their record to 40-48 with the win over Kyoto.

Sapporo used a clutch hit from Masuami Smith to get the win. The second baseman drilled a grand slam home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Bears ahead, 8-7. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We were the better team today. Maybe that won't be the case next game, but we'll enjoy it for now," Smith told the Sapporo Herald.
