| Reliables Drop Kingfishers, 5-4 | The Hosho Reliables had to overcome a fine effort from Yokohama pitcher Bill Sauerwein to win, 5-4, at Kanagawa Stadium. Sauerwein went 7 innings and allowed 4 runs. Hosho reliever Junya Yamagata snagged the win, upping his record to 8-2. Masaru Ryu shouldered the loss. Hosho goes to 56-31. The win puts them 7½ games up in their division.
Hosho used the timely hitting of Daijiro Nakamura to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Reliables on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"We were the better team today. Maybe that won't be the case next game, but we'll enjoy it for now," Nakamura told the Hosho Citizen.
