| Reliables Thwart Owls, 3-1 | Niou Nagao, who finished 5th in the EL in strikeouts with 148 last year, imposed his will on the Owls from the get-go. Relying mainly on his fastball, the right-hander spearheaded the 3-1 Hosho triumph. The winning pitcher was Nagao, now 7-4. He tossed 6 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 9. Zenichiro Tsuji was called on to finish, recording his 4th save.
Yamahiko Hirata, who is tied for 3rd in the EL with a .496 slugging percentage, had a direct impact on the outcome. Hirata contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the third inning to put Hosho up, 1-0.
"For the most part, I stayed out of the middle of the plate," Nagao said.
So far in 1963, Hosho is 32-26.
