The Sapporo Bears besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Hosho right fielder Hiroshi Ishikawa by beating the Reliables, 5-4, at Nagoya Minami Stadium. Ishikawa was 2 for 2 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. Sapporo is first in the Eastern League with a record of 30-17.

Sapporo won the game in part because of Ukyo Ota. The right fielder ripped a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Bears ahead, 4-2. For the game, Ota had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.

Ota called the win "a pick-me-upper."
