| Gothams Rack Up 7-3 Win Versus Philadelphia | New York second baseman Joe Jones contributed significantly to his team's 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Keystones. Jones, who won the Kellogg Award in 1971, went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored to lead the offensive attack for the Gothams. Harry Hayward was the winner. Over 6 innings, he yielded 1 run on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. The Gothams are now 38-43, while the Keystones fall to 37-43.
With New York leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Jones hit a forkball from Buzz Lucas for a 3-run home run. It was his 4th home run of the season and put the Gothams ahead, 4-0.
"I'm trying to see the ball big, see the ball up in the zone and put the barrel on it," Jones told the New York News. | |
