| Stars Claim 3-2 Triumph | Bob Goldman, who led the CA in strikeouts with 168 in 1971, pitched well, but the Chicago Cougars still fell short, losing, 3-2, to the Los Angeles Stars at Bigsby Stadium. The winner was George Dunnigan, who threw 98 pitches over 6 innings. The right-hander was charged with 2 runs on 6 hits. Jackie Thompson earned the save for Los Angeles, his 12th of the year.
Los Angeles right fielder Red Standish helped the Stars go up, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the game tied, Standish hit a run-scoring single off Chicago pitcher Bob Goldman.
"We just didn't score enough runs to win," said Chicago manager Pug Bryan.
The Stars now own a record of 45-28.
