| Oakes Stars for Eagles in 6-5 Win | The Washington Eagles dealt the Philadelphia Keystones a 6-5 loss at Columbia Stadium. Howdy Oakes, who finished 4th in the FA in batting average with .308 in 1965, was the star on offense. He was 2-3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Glenn Johnson, now 3-1, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 2.1 innings. The 5th-place Eagles have won 4 straight games.
Had Don Whited not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Whited hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Eagles.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Oakes said. | |
