| Gaines Excels in 9-8 New York Win | In a high-scoring game between New York and Toronto, third baseman Del Gaines was a difference-maker. The 26-year-old helped New York grab the 9-8 win. He slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Eddie Webb, who led the CA in ERA with 2.86 in 1958, was the winner in relief. His record is now 2-2. The losing pitcher was Jimmy Pepper. The 9th-place Imperials are 24-42.
Enos Bailey drove in one run for New York. The 30-year old first baseman had a key at-bat in the top of the eighth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 8-8 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Jimmy Pepper. It was his 9th RBI of the season.
"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Toronto manager Randy Hohlt. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."
