| Copperheads 7-1 Winners Versus Houston | Atlanta used a superb performance from starting pitcher Jack Kotarski to down the Houston Comets, 7-1. Frank Maxwell, who led the CA in saves with 26 in 1968, earned the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings. He upped his record to 1-0. The Federal Association East-leading Copperheads are 36-18.
Jim Duchesne had a big grand slam home run for the Copperheads in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Atlanta leading 2-1 and the bases loaded, he sized up a changeup from Johnny Blackburn, who is tied for 2nd in the FA with a 1.04 WHIP, and punished it. The result was his 7th home run of the season, which put the Copperheads on top, 6-1.
"You score one run, you're not going to win," said Houston skipper Glenn Carney. "You can have three Koufaxes and three Drysdales, you're still not going to win." | |
