| Copperheads, Suns Play 11 to Settle Game 1, Atlanta Now Leads Series 1-0 | When the games really matter, the Atlanta Copperheads put on their best show, beating the Los Angeles Suns by a final score of 4-3. Jim Place threw 6.2 innings of 2-hit ball. Atlanta now leads Los Angeles 1-0 in the best-of-5 affair.
Up to bat in the bottom of the 11th, three-time All-Star John Newton had a chance to be the hero. Los Angeles pitcher Ron Clark wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Newton hit a sacrifice fly. The Copperheads had themselves a thrilling win.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Atlanta manager Don Fox said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Peachtree Stadium in Atlanta.
