| Mefford Leads Providence to 3-0 Win Over Rochester Saturday, September 1st , 1917 The Rochester Millers manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Providence Clippers. The Millers were overpowered by Providence starter Jeff Mefford, who hurled his club to victory, 3-0.
"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," Pat Hopkins said.
Over 9 innings, Mefford blanked Rochester on 5 hits with no walks and 2 strikeouts.
"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Mefford said.
"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."
This year, Mefford has posted a 21-16 mark in 42 starts and has a 2.62 ERA. | | |
