 | Sparrows, Somsen Blank Albany, 8-0 Friday, August 3rd , 1917 The Albany Legislators manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Jersey City Sparrows. The Legislators were overpowered by Jersey City starter Cozy Somsen, who hurled his club to victory, 8-0. "It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," Lew Bryant said. Over 9 innings, Somsen blanked Albany on 8 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. "I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Somsen said. "I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one." In 31 starts this season, Somsen has picked up 11 wins while suffering 16 losses. He has pitched 234.2 innings, allowed 311 hits, struck out 88 and posted a 4.45 ERA. |   |
