| Hoover Stymies Salt Barons Saturday, September 2nd , 1916 The Syracuse Salt Barons manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Providence Clippers. The Salt Barons were overpowered by Providence starter Russ Hoover, who hurled his club to victory, 2-0.
"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," Robert Kruse said.
Over 9 innings, Hoover blanked Syracuse on 4 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.
"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Hoover said.
"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."
So far this season, Hoover has a 20-16 record, 36 starts, 318.1 innings, 151 strikeouts and a 2.46 ERA. | | |
