| Millard Sells Wolves Monday, January 15th , 1962 After twenty seasons of ownership, 77-year-old Bernie Millard has sold the Toronto Wolves. Millard, a native of Philadelphia, purchased the Wolves in 1942 and his twenty-year reign has resulted in a long string of losing seasons. Toronto has not enjoyed a .500-or-better season since 1948, which was also the last time the club finished in the first division.
The move is the culmination of a multi-year "retirement" effort by Millard. He sold his basketball club before the 1957-58 season and in 1960 put his coal business in the hands of his son. The younger Millard has no interest in sports and therefore, according to the team, "Mr. Millard made the difficult decision to sell his beloved Toronto Wolves."
The new owner brings a lot of hope for improvement to the franchise. His name is Robert Smith (he goes by Bob), a native of Kingston, Ontario. Fans are happy to see the club back in the hands of a Canadian. There has also been rejoicing among the club's fans, who hope that Smith is more willing to spend than Millard - a notorious skinflint - had been during his tenure.
Millard is retiring to Florida. | | |
