| Hovis Sizzles, Pittsburgh Fizzles Wednesday, September 12th , 1917 There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.
Dale Hovis of the Toronto Beavers blanked the Pittsburgh Mechanics, 1-0, at Maumee Park II, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 5-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.
"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Hovis said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."
Hovis walked 3 and struck out 4 in the victory.
"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Mechanics manager Jim Clement said later.
In 35 starts this season, Hovis has picked up 15 wins while suffering 14 losses. He has pitched 276.1 innings, allowed 267 hits, struck out 101 and posted a 2.21 ERA.
