| St. Louis Stymied by Dean Saturday, September 8th , 1917 Dick Dean of the Montreal Saints was masterful, pitching a 8-hit shutout, 4-0, against the St. Louis Pioneers.
By going the distance, he was at the same time able to give his bullpen a rest, a fact appreciated by Montreal manager Jim Jenkins.
"It's nice to have someone who can do that from time to time," he said. "He had command of every ball and every pitch. Great location, too."
Dean had 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in the outing.
To date this season, Dean sports a 16-13 mark with a 1.61 ERA in 25 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .217 batting average and has 139 strikeouts in 285.2 innings.
