| Eagles Stewart Stops Suns Saturday, September 7th , 1963 Jim Stewart of the Washington Eagles was on top of his game.
The 27-year-old tantalized the Los Angeles Suns with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.
"He had the changeup working," Los Angeles manager Bill Morrill said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Washington hurler had 4 strikeouts, gave up 6 walks and surrendered 3 hits in his complete-game effort.
Stewart told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
In 29 starts this season, Stewart has fashioned a 15-8 record and a 3.51 ERA.
