| Great Stroke: Selander Gets 5 Hits Saturday, August 17th , 1963 After his 5-hit effort at Fitzpatrick Park was tarnished by Pittsburgh's 8-7 loss to the Washington Eagles, first baseman Frank Selander told BNN beat writers it was "a missed opportunity for a special day."
"It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college, two hits in a game is nice," he said. "I would have been happy to stop there if it meant we got a win."
He didn't get the win, but the 30-year-old had a spectacular 5-for-6 game against the Eagles.
"His swing is getting there," said Miners skipper Harry Barrell after the game. "We want him to be quick with his swing, short and compact. We want him to be patient and go the other way when he can. Frank did that to perfection and we wasted it."
Frank Selander hit a two-run home run off Walter Paxson in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, grounded out in the 7th, hit an RBI double in the 9th and singled in the 11th.
A look at his season totals shows Selander with 4 home runs, .300 BA, .370 OBP, 40 RBIs and 47 runs scored.
