| Smith Slams 5 Hits for Atlanta Friday, August 22nd , 1975 The Atlanta Copperheads stopped the St. Louis Pioneers by a score of 12-5 at Pioneer Field III, with the lion's share of the credit going to catcher Howard Smith. The 27-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits.
"Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," Smith said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard."
Smith did just that in his 5 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the Pioneers.
"Not much that I can say," offered St. Louis manager Babe Johnson. "He just hammered the heck out of us."
Howard Smith hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 7th and singled in the 8th.
For the season, Smith has hit .267 with 9 home runs and 55 RBIs. He has played in 105 games and scored 51 times.
