Alford Pitches Gem as Cougars Beat Kansas City, 2-0
Sunday, July 6th , 1975
The Kansas City Mavericks manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Chicago Cougars. The Mavericks were overpowered by Chicago starter Roger Alford, who hurled his club to victory, 2-0.

"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," Bob Bendick said.

Over 9 innings, Alford blanked Kansas City on 5 hits with no walks and 1 strikeout.

"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Alford said.

"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."

In 19 starts this year, Alford has crafted a 8-9 record and a 3.22 ERA.
