| Sultan of Swing: Williams Goes Deep 3 Times Tuesday, August 7th , 1962 His swing was a thing of beauty. Three times Paul Williams swung the bat and three times he delivered a home run. It was an awesome sight to behold at Forester Stadium, but to no avail, for as good as he was, the Los Angeles Stars were better.
The Cleveland Foresters couldn't capitalize on the big game from Williams and dropped the contest, 8-6.
The mood in the Foresters clubhouse afterward was subdued, with several players remarking that they had allowed the Stars to spoil the day for Williams.
"Some of the boys are beating themselves up about it," Cleveland manager Jim Whitehead said. "They know we win as a team and lose as a team, but it's hard to really put that idea into practice on a day when one of you was playing on such an obviously higher level."
In addition to the homers, Williams collected 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs.
"I got three pitches down the pipe and popped them," the Cleveland first baseman told reporters. "Today I was in a groove. Tomorrow I could just pop the same pitches up and go 0-for-3."
Paul Williams singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Harry Stout in the 7th, hit a solo-shot off Harry Stout in the 9th and hit a solo-shot off Ted Ferguson in the 11th.
Williams currently has a .296 batting average with 101 hits, 17 homers, 61 RBIs, 66 runs scored and a .410 OBP. | | |
