| Eagles Win, 6-4, Versus Boston | The Boston Minutemen could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Charlie Roberts into a win. Instead, the Washington Eagles prevailed, 6-4. Roberts threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball. Don Eddy picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 6-12. Bud Shireman, who finished 5th in the FA in saves with 18 in 1970, was tagged with the loss. The 5th-place Eagles bumped their record to 68-86.
Washington used the timely hitting of Rube Hamilton to seize the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Eagles on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Nervous? No," said Hamilton. "It was my time to shine." | |
