Miners Turn Back Washington, 4-2 | The Pittsburgh Miners weathered a fine game by Washington first baseman George Whaley to upend the Eagles, 4-2, at Columbia Stadium. Whaley went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times. Pat Simon, the winning pitcher, improved to 10-5. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 2 and walking 1. Howie Thomas finished to wrap up his 3rd save.
Pittsburgh used the timely hitting of Bill Wise to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Miners on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"I thought we played a nice game," Wise told the Pittsburgh Daily News. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
The 'W' lifts Pittsburgh's record to 75-56. | |
