| Mavericks Hand Montreal 3-1 Loss | The Montreal Saints could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Jose Martinez into a win. Instead, the Kansas City Mavericks prevailed, 3-1. Martinez threw 8.2 innings of 7-hit ball. Fred Smith was the winner. Over 5.2 innings, he yielded 1 run on 7 hits, with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Charlie Wolf wrapped it up, recording his 11th save.
Kansas City used a well-timed hit by Mel Wingerter to capture the win. The center fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Mavericks ahead, 3-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Wingerter, "one at-bat at a time."
With the victory, the Mavericks record stands at 53-79.
