Champ Gives Minneapolis Goose Eggs | The Chicago Chiefs shut out the Minneapolis Millers, 2-0, behind the strong pitching of Dick Champ. Champ surrendered only 6 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 9.
Following the last out, Champ appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Minneapolis manager Frank Vance, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Champ's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The Millers skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Chiefs press conference, Champ confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Champ said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Chicago manager Dutch Becker added.
Thus far this season, Champ has tossed 91 innings in 14 starts, fanned 53 batters, walked 35 and put up a 4.05 ERA with 5 wins and 3 losses. | |
