| Clippers Blank Cleveland, Thorndike Winner | George Thorndike of the Baltimore Clippers was on top of his game.
The 23-year-old tantalized the Cleveland Foresters with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 1-0.
"He had the changeup working," Cleveland manager Ned Wiggins said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Baltimore hurler had 3 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 6 hits in his complete-game effort.
Thorndike told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
To date Thorndike is 5-7 in 12 starts with a 3.82 ERA and has 29 strikeouts in 94.1 innings. | |
