Columbia Stadium was the site of a competitive game between the Washington Eagles and New York Gothams.

Washington got a valiant performance from pitcher Eddie Yandow, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Gothams. New York won the game, 5-3. Yandow threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball for the losing team. Herb Isom, who finished 2nd in the FA in saves with 25 in 1971, picked up the win in relief. Earl Frazier took the loss for Washington.

New York used a timely hit from Carl Bramlett to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Gothams ahead, 5-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it made an impact.

New York manager Charlie Foley commended his team for "doing what it takes to win."

The loss drops Washington to 1-3.
