Boston pitcher Austin Mayer did his part in helping his team defeat the Cleveland Grays, 2-1. The opposition could never get too much going against the right-hander. John Hicks earned the save, his 5th. Boston leads the Union League by 2 games.

Had Fred McCranie not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 3rd, McCranie hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Beacons.

"Makes our job easier," said McCranie, "when our pitchers shut the opposition down."
