Champ Sparkles in 1-0 Shutout | The Chicago Cougars shut out the Los Angeles Stars, 1-0, behind the strong pitching of Dick Champ. Champ surrendered only 5 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 5.
Following the last out, Champ appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Los Angeles manager Charley McCullough, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Champ's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.
The Stars skipper would not comment on the exchange but, at the Cougars press conference, Champ confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.
"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Champ said.
"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Chicago manager Buck Cuppett added.
To date, Champ has a 6-4 mark in 19 starts with a 3.91 ERA. He has given up 137 hits in 124.1 innings, struck out 74 and issued 44 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .280 batting average against him. | |
