Pioneers Get Past Chicago, 5-4 | The St. Louis Pioneers had to overcome a fine effort from Chicago pitcher Jack Halbur to win, 5-4, in 10 innings at Whitney Park. Halbur went 8 innings and allowed 1 run. John Gibson claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. His record stands at 8-9. The 5th-place Chiefs now sit at 67-81.
Cal Randall drove in one run for St. Louis. With no one out and the game tied in the top of the tenth inning, Randall had a clutch at-bat. Facing Chicago hurler Tom Fisher, he hit a sacrifice fly to give the Pioneers a 5-4 lead.
"If you're not prepared, it's not pressure you feel, it's fear," mused St. Louis manager Lou Ormsby. | |
