Dynamos Use Late Rally to Win | Chicago got a valiant performance from pitcher Dick Champ, but it wasn't enough to beat the Detroit Dynamos. Detroit won the game, 3-2. Champ threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. Earl Shields snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit over 2 innings. He's now 5-6 on the season. With the win, Detroit goes to 61-74, while the Chiefs fall to 64-74.
Detroit used the clutch hitting of Lew Mercer to capture the win. The pinch hitter drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Dynamos ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a big one.
"We need better swings, better at-bats," said losing manager Dutch Becker. | |
