Pioneers Need Extra Frames to Get Past Dynamos
John Richards was the difference-maker for the St. Louis Pioneers in what turned into a shootout with the Detroit Dynamos. Richards, who finished 2nd in the FA in triples with 9 in 1972, went 4-for-5 in the extra-inning, 11-9 Pioneers win. Eddie Davis earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. He upped his record to 3-2. The defeat makes Detroit 37-71.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the 12th, with the game tied, Len Green was at the plate when St. Louis scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Pioneers to go in front, 8-7.

"It was one of those games where both teams were swinging the bat well," Richards said.
