The Washington Eagles converted a terrific effort from starter Wally Phillips into a win over the Chicago Chiefs at Columbia Stadium. The Eagles won the game by a final score of 6-1. Phillips went the distance for Washington. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits. The 61-69 Chiefs have lost 11 consecutive games.

The Eagles got a lift from shortstop Al Marino, who in the bottom of the sixth hit a run-scoring double. His 20th double of the season put the Eagles on top, 3-1.

"We won," Phillips told assembled media after the game. "I guess that's all that really matters."
