Eagles Lose Late, 5-4
Boston beat Washington at Minuteman Stadium, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to center fielder Dick Ward. He was 4 for 5 with a triple, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs. Bud Shireman earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 2 innings. He upped his record to 11-4. With the win, Boston raised its record to 58-48.

Boston went in front, 5-2, on Charlie Hartsell's 22nd double of the season. The bases-clearing double, which Hartsell hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Washington pitcher Doc Lindley visibly perturbed.
